Prof. Dirk Westermann ist Leiter des Fachgebiets Elektrische Energieversorgung und Direktor des Thüringer Energieforschungsinstituts.

IEEE, short for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, is the world's leading professional association in electrical engineering and computer science, dedicated to promoting technological innovation for the benefit of mankind. In particular, the IEEE PES aims to advance the design of standards for the development and construction of primary and secondary power equipment and to disseminate them throughout society and industry. Members of the Power and Energy Society are in constant exchange within the association. The German Chapter of IEEE PES promotes this networking and knowledge transfer among members.

Against the backdrop of Germany's rapidly advancing energy transition and the challenges it poses, it is more important than ever to intensively discuss knowledge and insights on new developments with the community in the context of conferences, professional and educational activities or networking events

,according to Prof. Westermann.

Even before his election as Chair of the German Chapter of IEEE PES, Prof. Westermann served as Treasurer on the Board of Directors. For more than ten years, he has also chaired the IEEE WG European Electricity Infrastructure in the IEEE.

Dirk Westermann studied general electrical engineering and received his PhD from the University of Dortmund in 1997. After various positions in management and R&D at a manufacturer of power systems and components with an international focus, he moved to TU Ilmenau as professor and head of the Power System Group. Since spring 2019, he has also headed the Thuringian Energy Research Institute (ThEFI) and the Center for Energy Technology (ZET). His current research focuses on the operation and design of electric power systems with a high share of renewable energy, especially technologies such as High-voltage direct current transmission and the next generation of grid control technology with assistance systems.
