Inter-university project ProTELC: Networking engineering students in Thuringia

The seven universities participating in the Alliance of Thuringian Engineering Sciences (Allianz THÜRING) have launched the joint project ProTELC. Over the next four years, the partners want to use the project to network engineering students more closely, bundle innovative forces from research and teaching, and strengthen Thuringia as a business location.

With the project ProTELC - Pro Thuringian Life Cycle –, the partners want to strengthen the Thuringian engineering sciences throughout the entire student life cycle and contribute to the fact that students in engineering science courses change or drop out of their studies less frequently, achieve better study results and have the best prospects for employment on the Thuringian job market at the end of their studies.Prof. Dr. Winfried Speitkamp, the president of Bauhaus University Weimar and spokesman for the THÜR ING alliance, emphasized in his opening speech at the kick-off event on January 27 that they will now show what Thuringia can do, and they will do it through cooperation.

The package of measures is all-encompassing and takes into account the special requirements of each individual study phase. At the start of studies, preliminary courses will make it easier to get started with a focus on mathematics, physics and chemistry. An orientation course, as a preliminary phase before the actual specialized studies, will enable the young future engineers to make a self-assessment based on personal competencies in the gigantic world of diverse engineering disciplines.

During the course of studies, refresher courses flank the regular curriculum and mentoring programs focus on underrepresented groups in engineering subjects, such as students from non-academic families, women or foreign students. Science Camps will alternate each semester, bringing together the best 35 Bachelor's and Master's students from each of the seven universities in an innovation competition and also networking with Thuringian industry and business. The first Bachelor Science Camp on the topic of "Digital Twin" will take place from March 07 - 11 at the TU Ilmenau.

And the end-of-study program focuses on concrete labor market empowerment with e-modules, barrier reduction and serves as a targeted soft skills school. In addition, a contact point for small and medium-sized enterprises acts as a career interface between universities and industry.

The goals of the THÜR ING alliance and, in particular, its ProTELC project are just as ambitious as the challenges facing Thuringia as an industrial location. But they can succeed through targeted cooperation, and this team spirit can radiate from the center of Germany to the entire state. The kick-off event was not only a prelude to this, but also promising in its entire atmosphere.

Responsibility for measures within the ProTELC project:

Pre-courses (Technische Universität Ilmenau, Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences) Orientation studies (Technische Universität Ilmenau, Bauhaus University Weimar) Refresher courses and mentoring (Erfurt University of Applied Sciences) Science camps (Bauhaus University Weimar) E-modules (Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences) SME contact point (Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena)
