Project description
Cilia (lat. singular cilium for cilium) are hair-like plasma extensions of eukaryotic cell membranes. They are used for locomotion in unicellular organisms and are found in organ systems of multicellular organisms. In the bronchi, for example, they are responsible for the removal of mucus from the lungs and in the fallopian tubes for the transport of the ovum. In this context, the metachronous movement of cilia fields is a very efficient form of transport.
In contrast to a synchronous movement, the metachronous movement of elements does not occur simultaneously, but is offset by a time delay. Thus, a wave motion occurs at the surface of the cilia field. The transport direction of an object placed on the cilia corresponds to that of the wave.
In this research project, the transferability of the principle of material transport according to the natural model of cilia to the macroscopic level is investigated. The focus of the investigations is on:
