With the Fellow of the IIW Award, the International Institute of Welding annually recognizes contributions from scientists who have been active participants in the IIW for at least ten years, have made outstanding contributions to the scientific field of welding technology, and have promoted and enhanced the professional reputation of the field.

Prof. Dr. Jorge Dos Santos is a senior scientist in the Applied Materials and Manufacturing Group of the Energy and Environment Division (EED) at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the Institute of Mechanics of Materials at the Helmholtz Center Hereon, and holds the position of Honorary Professor of Solid State Joining Processes in the Production Technology Group at TU Ilmenau. Within the IIW, Prof. Dos Santos is also the long-standing chairman of the commission for "Resistance Welding, Solid State Welding and Allied Joining Process" (C-III).

His research focuses on technologies for solid state joining processes, the processing of hybrid material combinations, and materials development. In particular, he is dedicated to friction stir welding (FSW), friction stir spot welding (FSSW, RFSSW), metal-plastic joining processes, and additive manufacturing. His work ranges from fundamental material flow issues to the relationship between microstructure and resulting properties to transfer to industry. Prof. Dos Santos' project portfolio includes long-term development programs with major players in the transportation industry, including Airbus, Boeing, Embarker, GKN, Mercedes-Benz, European Space Agency and Siemens Mobility. At the TU Ilmenau, he passes on this expertise and his experience to students of Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering or Industrial Engineering and Management, among others, in lectures and block seminars.

The "Fellow of the IIW Award" was presented to Prof. Dos Santos during the 76th IIW Annual Assembly & International Conference on Welding and Joining, which took place in Singapore from July 16 to 21, 2023.
