Take the ICE train to Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia. Once you arrive in Erfurt, take one of the regularly scheduled connecting trains to Ilmenau. The journey time for this is about 45 minutes. Of course, you can also cover the last 45 kilometers from Erfurt's main train station to Ilmenau via the autobahn by rental car or cab.
