Check out our recent open access publication in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics about “Combined particle image velocimetry and thermometry of turbulent superstructures in thermal convection”. The combination of long-time velocity and temperature measurements in a water Rayleigh-Bénard cell with a large aspect ratio of 25 allowed us to directly compute the convective heat transfer and identify the role of the superstructures. In addition, long-living regions of negative heat transport were also reported caused by the mixed boundary condition at the top wall.
