The generator of a photovoltaic system is the solar cell. An important pillar of cost reduction in photovoltaics is improving the efficiency of solar cells. The industry has increased the efficiency by 0.5%abs per year over the last 15 years. An important contribution to the improvement of solar cells is the derivation of a detailed loss analysis of the device. It makes it possible to identify the parts and areas of the solar cell and its manufacturing processes that need to be improved next. From this, a general optimization strategy can be derived - the socalled roadmap. As silicon solar cell technology is about to reach its efficiency limit, industrial tandem solar cells made of perovskite and silicon semiconductors are the most promising candidate for maintaining the efficiency increase of 0.5%abs per year.
