Ilmenau

@www.ilmenau.de

lmenau is a town located in the heart of Germany, at the edge of the Thuringia Forest. It is one of the largest towns in the state of Thuringia and it is situated very close to other university towns, such as ErfurtWeimar, or Jena

Now, if you were thinking that Ilmenau is huge, full of car noises, hurried people and sleepless nights, or if you haven’t Googled it until now, well, surprise: it’s not like that at all! Ilmenau is that city where once you arrive, you start to feel part of a big family! Only around 25.000 people live here and, surprisingly, one out of four people who live here is a student!

The city has its magic. No, we’re not talking about fairy tales, it is reality, and you will be convinced as soon as you get here. Even Goethe, the famous German writer, was happy to spend time in this town! (“I was always happy to spend time here, and still am. Methinks the reason lies in the harmony that is struck here …”), according to one of his letters sent to Schiller, back in 1795.

If you are a nature lover, then Ilmenau might be your ‘Wonderland’. You could explore the forests around here, or you could just sit and watch Ilmenau’s famous blue skies all day and never get sick of them. But beautiful nature is not the only thing Ilmenau has to offer. As well, you could visit the historical buildings and monuments in town, take part in the different recreational activities that take place in this town or, best of all, have a great time with the people living here. All of these things are definitely worth checking out!

History of Ilmenau

Ilmenau shares the same history as the state of Thuringia. In addition, Ilmenau has some special aspects of its own. Ilmenau was established in 1341 under the Ludovingian kings. Ilmenau past hands between the Ludovingian and various Saxon patriarchies.

This city was highly influenced by its main export businesses. It is an area that has always been famous for its glass and porcelain manufactures. Trade roads were maintained between Ilmenau, the larger Thuringia areas, and the world abroad in order to transport the valuable glass and porcelain products from Ilmenau to other areas. From its founding date up into the nineteenth century, glass has been a staple of the economy.

The city was also highly influenced by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The ruling duke sent Goethe to this area to take charge of the finances and some laws of the region. Goethe traversed the woods in this area, and there are many hiking trails that bare his name. In fact, the Kickelhahn is a monument high up in the woods around Ilmenau that contains a few verses from poems written by Goethe translated into several languages. It is a monument to the influence of this man on the city.

Today, Ilmenau still holds on to its roots, while looking to the future. Ilmenau has kept up some of its picturesque roads and churches. It is still a great place to buy glass and porcelain. It is still a beautiful city full of lush woodlands. Yet, it has now been transformed into a technological hotbed. The city is alive with new technological businesses. This makes it possible for students at TU Ilmenau to coalesce with mentors and companies with “real-world” experience. Ilmenau is a great place to study the science of the future, yet be grounded in the heritage of the past.

The university

TU Ilmenau was founded in 1894 as an Institute for Technology. Now, it has over 6600 students. The university offers courses and programs leading to officially recognised bachelor’s and master’s degrees and PhDs in several areas of study.
