After failing an exam, there are two repetitions possible. The first repetition is in the form of the original exam, the second repetition is always an oral exam.

The deadline to repeat exams are 2 semesters. E.g., failing Communications Engineering in the first semester, you'll have the second or third semester to go for the repetition. Missing this deadline causes an automatic fail for this exam.

Failing a second repetition will yield the exmatriculation.

A free trial can be used  to improve a grade of an exam that you already passed.
You can have free trials for 4 subjects (except the Master thesis) during the complete CSP program.

Requirements that a free trial can be used:

• The first trial must have been passed

• The first trial must have been taken as the lecture occurs in the study guidelines, e.g., Communications Engineering in the first semester.

• The free trial counts as a repetition of an exam, i.e., also here the 2 semester deadline holds. It can only repeated once. E.g., if you want to improve your grade in Communications Engineering, you have to do this at latest in the third semester.

Note that you also have to register for a free trial. As the exam has been passed already, it won't appear at the Thoska terminal. Please register for free trials directly at the examination's office.
 

There's no maximum study duration fixed but the deadlines will force an end of the studies sooner or later.
The deadline to go for an exam the first time is 4 semesters. If you skip a lecture from the 3rd semester completely, you'll have 4 semesters to go for it the first time. The we would be in semester 7 already. If you still don't participate at the exam it will be counted as automatic fail, again with 2 semesters repetition deadline, and so on.

After the regular program duration (4 semesters) + another 4 semesters, the university will charge you 500 EUR per semester.

Please follow the guidelines when you plan to go for the final thesis. There you'll find the information, which documents are required if you do a thesis at the faculty, at a different faculty or outside the university.

Note that the first step is to have this confirmation (beginning 2008) or confirmation (beginning 2013) filled in by the examination's office, which states that you reached 90 credit points.
Also, if you want to start officially your master's thesis in the next month you should submit all your documents before the 15th of current month to the examination office.

Respect the opening hours of the examination's office.

The board of the program can allow an extension of the thesis up to 3 months. Hand in a letter describing the reasons for the extension to Prof. Haardt. It should also contain the signature of your supervising Professor and a statement that he supports the extension.

Internships are not mandatory as they are not scheduled in the study plan. If you want to go for an internship anyway, some things need to be considered:

• Are you allowed to work with your visa?

• If you are allowed to work, how many days? (in most cases 90 days)

• If it is during the lecture period -> can you still handle the exams?

• After completing all exams it will be difficult to go for an internship. You'll face some difficulties with the Ausländerbehörde as they expect you to complete your studies as soon as possible, i.e., you should go for the thesis instead.

• Due to important reasons up to 2 holiday semesters can be taken

  • Illness

  • An internship if it is not part of the study plan

  • A stay abroad due to studies (if it is not part of the study plan)

  • Military or civil service

  • Maternity/parental leave

  • Extensive work in the committees of the university

  • Familial reasons, e.g., sick family members who need more than 20 hours care per week. Doctor's certificate required

  • Important reasons are:

• Before applying for a holiday semester we recommend you to double-check with the Ausländerbehörde regarding your visa regulations

• The latest date to apply for a holiday semester is the day before the registration period for the exams starts. In this case you can also apply for a refund of the semester fee

• If you apply already during the registration period for the semester you don't have to pay the semester fee, but you also loose the student's casualty insurance and the train ticket then.

• The following documents need to be submitted to the examination's office in order to apply for a holiday semester:

  • Form

  • Your Thoska card

  • Confirmation that the semester fees have been paid

  • Confirmation for the health insurance (in case the status is changed during the holiday semester)

  • Written statement for the holiday semester with the required confirmations for the reason (see above)

• Holiday semesters are not counted in terms of your study duration

• Only exams from previous semesters can be written

• Deadlines for repetitions are not extended by taking holiday semesters
