EMPK Presented Several Research Papers on ICA Annual Conference in Paris

Members of research group Empirical Media Research and Political Communication (EMPK), Dr. Christina Schumann and Mira Rochyadi-Reetz presented three research papers on International Communication Association (ICA) annual conference in Paris, 26-30 May 2022.

One research paper presents the results of an international research cooperation between EMPK/ TU Ilmenau and three other universities in Pakistan and Indonesia. After 2 years of virtual cooperation, it was the first time that all project partners met face-to-face. The paper is on information avoidance in Pakistan, Germany and Indonesia during global Covid-19 pandemic and sheds light on the role of media use and evaluations in this context. This paper also contributes to overcome one major point of criticism of the #CommunicationSoWhite-Movement, which highlights that many countries of the Global South are simply not represented in the current scientific discourse and calls for a “de-Westernization” of communication science. Authors of this paper are Dr. Christina Schumann, Dr. Waqas Ejaz, Mira Rochyadi-Reetz, Anna Agustina Phd., and Prof. Dr. Eni Maryani.

Additionally, Dr. Christina Schumann presented a paper with the title „When the Energy Transition Meets People's Lives.“ Core of the paper is a segmentation of the German population concerning attitudes and knowledge about the energy transition, its risks and chances as well as related changes in energy supply or infrastructure. This paper is part of the research project “Science Communication on Energy Transition”, which is funded by the German Ministry of Research and Education (BMBF). Authors of this paper are Dr. Dorothee Arlt, Sophia Schaller, Prof. Dr. Jens Wolling, Natalia Sultanova, Dr. Christina Schumann and Marius Becker.

Last but not least, Mira Rochyadi-Reetz presented her research on journalists use of news sourcing on climate change reporting in Indonesia. The paper is part of her dissertation research project at TU Ilmenau.
