Our research field on environmental-, energy- and sustainability-communication focuses on public communication about ecological problems. In this context, we study challenges for politics and society as well as exposure to and effects of related media coverage. In this research field, we scrutinize citizen’s information avoidance of political information and related media coverage. Particularly, we focus on the phenomenon “issue fatigue” which is a negative stance towards a news topic that it is intensively covered in the media. Issue fatigue can lead – after a phase of initial exposure – to citizens’ information avoidance of news about the respective topic. Our research concentrates on the definition as well as causes and consequences of issue fatigue. You may find further information and publications among “research” on our website.

Das Fachgebiete „Empirische Medienforschung und politische Kommunikation“ hat eine Kooperation mit dem UNESCO-Biosphärenreservat im Thüringer Wald begonnen (http://www.biosphaerenreservat-vessertal.de/). Im Rahmen dieser Kooperation können/sollen mehrere Teilprojekte im Rahmen von Abschlussarbeiten (Bachelor/Master) und Medienprojekten bearbeitet werden.

Die Assoziationen, die die meisten Menschen mit dem Namen „Biosphärenreservat“ verbinden, sind vermutlich „unberührte Natur, Naturschutz, Vermeidung menschlicher Eingriffe“. Tatsächlich geht es bei Biosphärenreservaten aber gerade um die Vereinbarkeit von menschlicher Nutzung mit dem Schutz der natürlichen Umwelt. Es geht um Fragen der nachhaltigen Entwicklung. Die häufig falsche Wahrnehmung der Funktionen eines Biosphärenreservats ist eine potenzielle Quelle von Konflikten zwischen den Bewohnern der Region und den Aktivitäten der Biosphärenreservats-Verwaltung. 

Folgende Forschungsprojekte für Abschlussarbeiten können derzeit bearbeitet werden:

• Was wissen die Bewohner des Biosphärenreservats über das Biosphärenreservats? Welche Vorstellungen von der Funktion des Biosphärenreservats haben sie? Woher (aus welchen Informationsquellen) haben die Bewohner die Informationen und Vorstellungen? Auf welchen  Wegen könnten die Bewohner erreicht werde, um adäquate Vorstellungen zu vermitteln?

• Wie nutzen die Besucher des Informationszentrums im Schmiedefeld die Ausstellung? Welche Angebote werden positiv, welche werden negativ beurteilt? Was sollte verbessert werden? Gelingt eine Wissensvermittlung?

• Ilmenau ist die größte Ortschaft im Biosphärenreservat. Die Bewohner der Stadt, und nicht zuletzt die Studierenden der TU Ilmenau sind eine wichtige Zielgruppe für das Biosphärenreservat. Im Rahmen der Arbeit soll herausgefunden werden welche Kenntnisse und Erfahrungen bei den Studierenden der TU Ilmenau über das Biosphärenreservat vorhanden sind. Woher stammen die Kenntnisse? Wie lassen sich die Kenntnisse verbessern? Durch welche kommunikativen Maßnahmen lassen sich das Interesse und die Motivation der Studierenden erhöhen, sich mit dem Biosphärenreservats auseinanderzusetzen und Veranstaltungen des Biosphärenreservats zu besuchen? 

Citizen journalism, grassroots journalism, participatory or collaborative journalism, guerrilla journalism and citizen media - there are many different designations for a form of journalism in which citizens actively participate in media reporting by independently researching information, creating content themselves and distributing it via diverse Web 2.0 forms of online communication, or just commenting on journalistic articles and possibly working together with professional journalists.

Citizen journalism as socio-political participation in a democratic system should be viewed as a form of public participation. This raises the question of what contribution citizen journalists make and to what extent these citizen activities help to improving information, communication and participation processes in a democracy.

It is apparent that there is a need for public participation, especially on highly controversial, bipolar topics, in order to increase social acceptance. This can affect large-scale infrastructural construction projects (e.g. Stuttgart21, BERlin Airport) or technical facilities (e.g. wind farms), but also generally apply to socio-political conflict issues, such as energy policy, climate change policy or Corona policy. Basically, it can be said that the opportunities for citizens for co-determination and participation in the associated decision-making and implementation processes are highly regulated and therefore very limited.

It is possible that citizen journalists can play a key role here by participating in the democratic system as alternative mediators of information and thus stimulating and triggering communication processes. However, it must be critically questioned what journalistic self-image they have or how they research and process their information.

Is today’s citizen journalism the true quality journalism of tomorrow? Or is it more of an accelerator for the spread of "fake news"?

The media plays an important role in times of crisis. In particular our research focuses on media communication about corona pandemic. We study how recipients are affected in their perceptions, emotions, attitudes and behaviors regarding corona pandemic by the media, including traditional and new media formats such as social media.

A bachelor/master thesis could shed light on the following major themes using primary data:

• Quantitative or qualitative content analysis of media communication about corona pandemic

How is corona crisis depicted by the media? Building on framing research a thesis could analyze the way in which the media such as newspapers or social media frame corona crisis.

To whom does the media assign responsibility for causing the pandemic and dealing with it? In order to examine how the media frames the crisis, in particular, a thesis could focus on the concept of responsibility framing. Notably, this is only one example for investigating media frames. Based on prior literature you could also identify other relevant framing concepts for addressing how corona crisis is depicted by the media.

Which themes are mentioned in media communication about corona pandemic? What is the medias’ tone? Building on agenda setting theory a thesis could examine which themes and subthemes are associated with the pandemic in the media (first-level agenda setting). Further you could shed light on the medias’ tone, e.g. whether the media covers corona crisis rather positive or negative.

How mental health issues are depicted in media communication about corona pandemic? A thesis could address this question in different ways. You could investigate how often mental health issues are mentioned in media communication about corona pandemic. Furthermore, it is possible to analyze subthemes or the tone (agenda setting). Finally, it is interesting how mental health in the context of corona pandemic is framed, e.g. one could shed light on the proposed solutions (framing).

How does communication about corona crisis differ depending on media type? Following research on differential media effects, for example, a thesis could compare agenda setting or framing in quality newspapers versus tabloid.

• Experimental investigations of media effects on recipients’ experiences regarding corona pandemic

Building on framing research a thesis could examine how media frames regarding corona pandemic influence recipients’ related perceptions (e.g. risk perceptions), attitudes (e.g. beliefs in conspiracy theories, policy support) and behavioral intentions (e.g. participation, intention to get vaccinated).

• Qualitative analysis of (media) experiences concerning corona pandemic

A thesis could also shed light on how people experienced media communication about corona pandemic using qualitative methods such as interviews. For example, it would be interesting to find out which media experiences people found as mentally stressful.

As we still have collected a wide set of survey data concerning recipients’ (media) experiences during corona pandemic we also offer the opportunity of secondary data analysis for bachelor/master thesis:

• The media and attitudes

Building on segmentation research a thesis could analyze how media communication affects recipients’ beliefs in related conspiracy theories and which persons are especially susceptible.

Furthermore, it is also possible to analyze how media communication about the crisis affects satisfaction with and trust in government, for example following agenda setting theory or source credibility theory.

• The media and behavior

Following research on political participation a thesis could analyze how media communication about corona pandemic affects peoples’ civic and political engagement (online and offline) regarding the crisis.

Furthermore, it is possible to analyze how media communication regarding the pandemic affects vaccination behavior, for example, building on health belief model or protection motivation theory. In this regard it would be also interesting to examine whether behavior differs depending on media use habits.

Folgende Medienprojekte können bearbeitet werden:

Ein wichtiges Ziel des Biosphärenreservats ist die Stärkung der regionalen, umweltfreundlichen Wertschöpfung. Zu diesem Zweck werden beispielsweise lokale Produzenten von Lebensmitteln mit Gastronomiebetrieben zusammengebracht. Im Rahmen eines Partnerschaftsprogramms werden auch Gastronomiebetriebe zertifiziert, die sich einer nachhaltigen Bewirtschaftung verschrieben haben. Zweimal im Jahr veranstaltet das Biosphärenreservat mit den zertifizierten Gasthöfen ein Genusswochenende. Einmal zum Thema „Wild“ und einmal zum Thema „Fisch“. Diese Veranstaltungen sollen durch kurze Werbefilme und ggfs. weitere Ideen beworben werden. Ziel des Medienprojekts ist die Produktion der Werbefilme und die Entwicklung einer Vermarktungsstrategie.

Bürgerjournalismus als gesellschaftspolitische Teilhabe in einem demokratischen System soll als Form der Bürger- bzw. Öffentlichkeitsbeteiligung betrachtet werden. Dabei stellt sich die Frage, welchen Beitrag Bürgerjournalisten*innen leisten und inwiefern diese Bürgeraktivitäten zur Verbesserung der Informations-, Kommunikations- und Partizipationsprozesse in einer Demokratie beitragen. Durch die vielfältigen Formen der Web2.0 Online-Kommunikation (z.B. YouTube, Facebook, Blogs) haben Bürger*innen eine Plattform, ihre Inhalte und Kommunikationsbotschaften zu verbreiten.

Es zeigt sich, dass speziell an stark kontrovers diskutierten, bipolaren Themen ein Bedarf an Bürger- bzw. Öffentlichkeitsbeteiligung besteht, um gesellschaftliche Akzeptanz zu erhöhen. Das kann großinfrastrukturelle Bauprojekte (z.B. Stuttgart21, Flughafen BERlin) oder technische Anlagen (z.B. Windparks) betreffen, aber auch allgemein für gesellschaftspolitische Konfliktthemen gelten, wie z.B. Energiepolitik, Klimawandelpolitik oder Corona-Politik. Generell lässt sich feststellen, dass die Möglichkeiten der Mitbestimmung und Partizipation für Bürger *innen an damit verbundenen Entscheidungs- und Implementierungsprozessen stark reglementiert und dadurch sehr begrenzt sind.

Möglich ist, dass Bürgerjournalisten*innen hier eine Schlüsselrolle einnehmen, indem sie als alternativer Informationsvermittler am Demokratiesystem partizipieren und somit Kommunikations­prozesse anregen und auslösen. Jedoch muss unter anderem kritisch hinterfragt werden, welches journalistische Selbstverständnis sie haben oder wie sie ihre Informationen recherchieren und aufbereiten.

Ist der Bürgerjournalismus von heute der wahre Qualitätsjournalismus von morgen? Oder ist es eher ein Brandbeschleuniger für die Verbreitung von „Fake News“?
