Under the motto "Beflügelt - International Young Master Pianists", scholarship holders of the Elfrun Gabriel Foundation will present a top-class piano program on Friday, 24 October in the Audimax of the TU Ilmenau. Samuel Choi and Jiyoung Kim from the "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" University of Music and Performing Arts Leipzig will perform.
The first part of the evening will be performed by the internationally renowned pianist Samuel Choi. He opens with Johann Sebastian Bach's Partita No. 5 in G major, BWV 829, in which a series of dance movements with clear lines, elegance and fine counterpoint can be heard. This is followed by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Variations sérieuses op. 54, a serious and exciting variation work which develops from a simple theme to ever greater depth of expression and brilliance. The first part concludes with Frédéric Chopin's Scherzo No. 4 op. 54, which combines poetic lyricism with virtuoso radiance and culminates in a dazzling finale.
The South Korean Jiyoung Kim will then play Ludwig van Beethoven's Six Variations in F major on his own theme op. 34, in which Beethoven transforms his theme in surprising colors and characters. The musical highlight of the evening will be Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No. 8 in B flat major, op. 84, whose wide-ranging, thoughtful attitude in the first two movements leads to an energetic, rhythmically pointed finale.
Tickets are available at the box office from 5 p.m. for €10 (reduced price for students €5).
