Living in Ilmenau

Finding a place to live in Ilmenau is usually not a problem.

It is possible to find a place to live on campus at the Studierendenwerk Thüringen to rent a place on campus. The application phase for the winter semester already begins on 01.04. of the year in which the studies are to be taken up and takes place online. The Studierendenwerk gives priority to all applicants for an appartment for the winter semester whose application has been received by 31 July.

Residence registration

If you move to Ilmenau for the first time, no matter if you have your main or secondary residence, you have to register this within two weeks at the residents' registration office of the city of Ilmenau.

If you have also registered your main residence in Ilmenau by 31.12. of a year, you can apply for the student grant 100 Euro per year from the city.

Financing your studies

On average, students in Germany need around €800 a month for their living expenses. This was the result of the most recent social survey by the German Student Union. This includes an average of € 320 for rent including utilities.
