Mechanical engineering and precision engineering have a long tradition in Ilmenau. In 1955, the Department of Precision Mechanics and Optics was founded, from which the current Department of Mechanical Engineering emerged in 1990, becoming one of the most important faculties of the Technische Universität Ilmenau. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is characterized by its precision mechanics, optics and electronics profile.
Interdisciplinary and cross-faculty cooperation as well as the bundling of competences to form internationally competitive research foci also have an effect on modern teaching in the degree programs Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics and Optical Systems Engineering/Optronics.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering is responsible for three bachelor's, four master's and one diploma course.
A major concern of our university education is the promotion of research-oriented teaching through early involvement of students in research projects of the research groups, through student participation in research teams and independent work on project tasks.
