Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering!

Mechanical engineering and precision engineering have a long tradition in Ilmenau. In 1955, the Faculty of Precision Mechanics and Optics was founded, which in 1990 became the current Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is characterized by its focus on precision engineering, optics, and electronics.

Interdisciplinary and cross-faculty collaboration, as well as the pooling of expertise into internationally competitive research areas, also contribute to modern teaching in the degree programs in Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics.

Research

23 groups, 4 internal and 6 inter-departmental Institute

Examples of interdisciplinary research can be found in two junior research groups, a research training group, the Competence Center Nanopositioning and Nanometrology Machines and the Thuringian Center for Mechanical Engineering.

Study

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is responsible for 3 bachelor's and 3 master's degree programs.

A major concern of our university education is the promotion of research-oriented teaching through early involvement of students in research projects of the research groups, through student participation in research teams and independent work on project tasks.
