The Senior Citizens' Academy of the TU Ilmenau opens up to all citizens and is now called "TU Ilmenau Citizens' Campus"

Our next lecture

Friday, December 02, 2022, 3:00 p.m., Faraday construction

PD Dr. Günther Lange TU Ilmenau

Fabrication and properties of porous metals - especially aluminum foams

Nature shows us in numerous concepts how lightweight construction with a cellular structure can work. The corresponding structures of plants and living beings show a high stiffness and strength with a minimum weight, e.g. the bone (spongiosa). In addition, a good energy absorption can be realized with the help of a cellular structure (shell of the pomelo fruit). Nature shows us in numerous concepts how lightweight construction can work. Cellular open-pored and closed-pored metals lend themselves to transferring these positive properties to technical applications. In addition to the substitution of steel materials with aluminum and magnesium alloys, aluminum foams can be an innovative alternative for lightweight construction. Compared to monomaterials, metal foams exhibit better energy and damping properties as well as higher specific stiffness. However, they have lower absolute strengths compared to the solid material. The presentation will give an overview of the manufacturing processes, main properties and applications of metallic foams.

In addition, there will probably be one more date for an excursion.

Review of previous semesters

"Will drones fall on our heads in the future?", "Artificial intelligence - public perception and risk communication" or "The digitalization wave in medical care: Claim and Reality": The range of content covered by the TU Ilmenau Citizens' Campus is diverse and includes socio-political and cultural-political topics, natural sciences and humanities, technical, economic, medical, historical and cultural topics.

In the review of previous semesters you will find an overview of the events and topics of the past years.
