Prof. Dr. em. Karl Heinemeyer University of Erfurt

Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa and Erfurt

This year 2022 marks the 900th anniversary of the birth of the Staufer Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa. Erfurt obviously played a prominent role for him during his reign as king and emperor (1152/1155-1190). No king or emperor of the early and high Middle Ages visited the city as often as Frederick I. For example, he accepted the submission of the deposed Duke of Saxony and Bavaria Henry the Lion here. The reasons for this special importance of the Mainzian center in Thuringia for emperor and empire in the second half of the 12th century will be traced in the lecture. This also raises the question of how we should imagine today's capital of Thuringia at that time and what possibilities the city could offer the ruler.
