What are the orientation program?

You are not yet sure whether an engineering degree is right for you? Do you want more practical experience in your studies and would you like close supervision and additional support? Or would you like to gain additional experience together with students from other programs?

Technische Universität Ilmenau has an orientation program that gives you the opportunity to find out about your interests and abilities in practical projects with other students and close supervision.

Through the orientation offerings, you'll benefit from....

... interdisciplinary cooperation right from the start.

...offers for personal development.

...personal and intensive support.

...additional practical relevance & the opportunity to gain insight into companies at the beginning of your studies. This can make it much easier for you to find an internship and start your career.

...an easier change of study program within the engineering programs of the TU Ilmenau. A change after the first or second semester is also not a problem for a Bafög-benefit.

What you can look forward to

  • exciting practical projects
  • applying your knowledge and learned skills in other subjects as well
  • working in a motivated team of students

Who can participate in the orientation services?

Students in their first semester of the degree programs:

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Mechatronics
  • Automotive Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering and Information Technology

What are the offers?

Career orientation and answering the question "What does an engineer do?" through company visits, presentations by graduates of the degree programs or industry and business partners.

Interdisciplinary practical project: Students are divided into smaller teams and then work together on the respective projects (across all degree programs). The early integration of this practical component in the course of study makes the necessity of acquiring theoretical fundamentals more apparent. In addition, the practical project supports better anchoring of knowledge and the ability to have this knowledge ready for application.

Courses on key qualifications such as time management, project management and also self-management for the practical project and for the studies are integrated.

The offers are divided into two parts - The course "Aspects of Engineering" with 3 ECTS and the "Interdisciplinary Practical Project" with 5 ECTS. Both parts go over the first two semesters and run parallel to your study plan.

Procedure and enrollment

The orientation courses are offered during the first two semesters. If you want to take advantage of the orientation offers, you can register for them during the introductory week. However, there is only a limited number of places!

Once you are enrolled in the orientation offerings, they will be included in your study agreement.

The additional courses will take place on Thursday mornings and Friday afternoons.
