We all take drinking water for granted – a resource that we use without a second thought. Wastewater treatment takes place almost out of sight. The rivers are clean and teeming with life. We spend the equivalent of about 2 minutes’ average daily income on this every day.
Yes, all this is fine, and that’s how it should stay. But is that even possible? The water sector, too, is facing the enormous challenges of our time: climate change, demographic shifts, inflation and civil protection. In addition, there are further specific challenges, such as PFAS in drinking water, pharmaceutical residues in wastewater and phosphate recovery from sewage sludge. The presentation explains the implications of all this, the problems it causes, but also the potential solutions: quite a few things need to change so that things can stay as they are.
