“Do you know Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen?” This question is asked very frequently, particularly in the year of his 200th birthday.

Georg II (1826–1914), known as the ‘Theatre Duke’, was a progressive, creative ruler whose influence extended far beyond the duchy. He was regarded as a patron of the theatre and a visionary who strove for something new and more modern.

In her talk on Duke Georg II, Joanna Izdebski brings these perspectives together: historical insights, personal experiences and modern leadership principles – and the question of what we can learn today from an extraordinary life’s work.

Joanna Izdebski is Head of Strategic Networks & Innovation at GFE Schmalkalden e.V. and has many years’ experience at the interface between business, research and entrepreneurship. Her focus lies on establishing international collaborations, innovation networks and forward-looking projects in industry and technology.

As Chair of Meininger TheaterFreunde e.V., she is also deeply committed to the region’s cultural life and, in her work, combines economic perspectives with cultural heritage. She has had a special personal connection with the Meiningen Theatre for many years: her husband, Pawel Izdebski, worked there as a soloist, giving her an early, first-hand insight into the artistic work and the unique local theatre tradition.
