Citizens' Campus: “Oh, that the inner creative power might resound through my mind!” — Goethe as an Artist

Around 2,700 sketches and drawings by Johann Wolfgang Goethe have survived to the present day. Safely preserved in Weimar, they complement the poetic and essayistic works of this versatile artist in an impressive manner.

Alongside the approximately 1,000 works featuring Thuringian motifs, the Italian collection forms the largest part of his visual art. On almost all his travels, he took up his pen and sketched to complement the written word. 

Alongside quick outline sketches and portraits, there are finely executed works that continue to impress to this day. In Italy, however, he realised that a career as a major visual artist would remain beyond his reach. And so he continued to draw, purely for the pleasure of it, amongst the circle of friends at the Musenhof.
