The energy transition is fundamentally changing our energy supply. We are moving away from a few large power stations towards many renewable energy generators across the regions. This has an impact on technology, infrastructure and on us as a society. We are not just consumers; we are also becoming producers: with solar roofs, heat pumps, storage systems and new business models.

In this talk, I will explain what these changes mean for security of supply, prices and our everyday lives. I will address common concerns: Is there a risk of a blackout? Will electricity become unaffordable? What does this mean for jobs in our region? Using data and findings from research projects at Fraunhofer IOSB-AST, I will explain how smart grids, storage systems and digital solutions can make the energy supply more stable and resilient to crises.

A strong society makes informed decisions. It seizes the opportunities presented by the energy transition, protects itself against risks and ensures a fair balance of interests. My aim is to show how we can all play our part in ensuring that the energy transition succeeds here in our local area.

Oliver Warweg studied at the Technische Universität Ilmenau and obtained his diploma in Business Informatics in 2002. Since 2002, he has worked as a developer, researcher and project manager at Fraunhofer IOSB-AST in Ilmenau. From 2012, he was group leader of the Energy Economics and Systems Analysis Group and later of the Energy Informatics Group within the Cognitive Energy Systems Department. Since 2024, he has been responsible for Strategic Business Development at Fraunhofer IOSB-AST.

He has extensive experience in the fields of energy management systems and energy data management, as well as the associated business processes for the operation of energy systems. He has many years’ experience in implementing regulatory requirements in energy management systems, particularly at the interface between municipal utilities and energy suppliers, as well as in software development for energy market participants in the liberalised market.

He sits on the Executive Board of the Federal Association for Energy Market and Communication (EDNA), is spokesperson for EDNA’s Technology Initiative, domain lead for the energy sector within the German GAIA-X Hub, and coordinator of the Energy and Environment business area at the Fraunhofer Alliance for Big Data and AI.
