When eating becomes a burden, there is often more to it than just a harmless indigestion. Postprandial pain – that is, abdominal pain after eating – can be a sign of mesenteric claudication – a circulatory disorder affecting the blood vessels of the bowel, which causes anxiety in those affected and often leads to a genuine fear of eating. It is particularly important to note that these symptoms may be early warning signs of mesenteric ischaemia. This acute circulatory disorder is one of the most dangerous abdominal emergencies: within a short space of time, bowel tissue can die off, which, if left untreated, becomes life-threatening.
The lecture will explain how such warning signs arise, which modern diagnostic methods enable early detection, and what treatment options – ranging from medication to endovascular procedures – are available. The aim is to raise awareness of the urgency of these conditions and to highlight ways in which those affected can regain confidence in their diet.
The speaker, CA Benli, works in vascular medicine and has many years’ experience in treating abdominal circulatory disorders. His expertise provides an accessible insight into an often underestimated but highly relevant clinical condition.
