In autumn 2024, there are increasing signs of difficult economic development: pessimistic economic forecasts, reports of a lack of competitiveness, alleged threats to our companies from Chinese state-owned companies, dependence on American digital corporations, bureaucratization, etc. As a result, quite a few people are calling for the state to finance the economic turnaround through targeted investments in the "right" innovations and technologies, in infrastructure and in German and European "champion" companies.

But is this a promising strategy? What offers us better economic opportunities in the current global economic environment - should we rely on the state or the market? On global trade or on economic autonomy with a focus on domestic supply chains? What does all this mean for jobs and inflation? And for ambitious social goals in areas such as sustainability and education? The lecture explores these questions and provides answers as to whether everything is really getting worse or whether the future offers at least as many opportunities as risks.
