The energy transition is posing a challenge to our energy system: renewable energies, battery storage, electromobility and power-electronic consumers are fundamentally transforming the energy supply. At the same time, the importance of efficient, flexible and resilient electricity grids is growing. Direct current (DC) technologies are playing an increasingly important role. Many generators, storage systems and consumers already operate internally on direct current. DC technologies open up opportunities to reduce energy conversions, increase efficiency and develop innovative system concepts – from DC microgrids and smart grid components to the integration of photovoltaics, battery storage and electric mobility, a wide range of research and application fields are emerging.
The Thuringian Energy Research Institute sees itself as a platform for addressing such future-oriented topics scientifically and supporting the transfer of research findings into practice. The development and testing of new technologies for a decentralised energy supply provide opportunities for collaboration between academia, industry and utility providers such as grid operators and municipal utilities. As part of our scientific colloquium – the Energia Connecticum – we would like to present our research projects and new technological approaches and discuss current developments and new perspectives with you.
