Higher education institutions (HEIs) play a key role in the transition to a more sustainable society (UNEP, 2021). Consequently, universities should also adhere to sustainability principles beyond their teaching and research activities. They should adopt a holistic approach and incorporate the various aspects of sustainability into all areas of the institution, such as administration, governance and procurement, as well as the management of buildings, infrastructure and green spaces on campus.

The aim of the symposium is to facilitate the exchange of experiences amongst HEIs from the EU and ASEAN, identify common challenges, and share innovative solutions for advancing the sustainability transition in higher education. As part of the GreenTrans-Edu project, the symposium also aims to expand the GreenTrans-Edu network and foster long-term partnerships and cooperation on sustainability amongst higher education institutions within the GreenTrans-Edu network and the Thuringian higher education institutions’ sustainability network.
