The Long Night of Science in Erfurt - and the TU Ilmenau is there!

On Friday, November 8, 2024, the city of Erfurt invites you to the Long Night of Science - and TU Ilmenau will be there.

Children and young people aged 10 and over, families and anyone interested in science can experience science live and get hands-on at the university's Erfurt site, Willy-Brandt-Platz 1-2, directly opposite the main railway station, from 5 pm until late in the evening:

6 - 9 p.m. | Robot-assisted acoustic measurements

For many applications, such as building acoustics, noise measurement or the use of public address systems, but also for so-called mixed reality applications, there is a desire to measure in high resolution how sound propagates in a room. To this end, TU Ilmenau has developed a mobile measuring robot in collaboration with the company MetraLabs that can measure autonomously and reliably over long periods of time. This measuring robot and examples of its use to date will be presented at the Long Night of Science.

6 - 10 p.m. | Grid fault challenge - restore a city's power supply!

One fault in the power grid and an entire city is dark. Can you switch the lights back on? Experience for yourself what it feels like to restore a power grid after a fault. Explore the tasks of operators, learn about the added value of assistance systems and use them on site! On our remote control room simulator, you can restore a power grid and experience the complexity behind this process.

At the same time, scientists will provide information about the work and research at the Thuringian Energy Research Institute, which deals with many topics relating to the energy transition. Staff from the study orientation department will also provide a comprehensive overview of the study opportunities at TU Ilmenau.
