A panel discussion on the topic of "Underrepresentation of Students from the New Federal States in the German Study Support Organisations" will take place at the TMWWDG on Monday, 13.09.2021 in the time from 5 - 7 pm with the participation of Minister Tiefensee and State Secretary Feller.

The background to the event is the observation that we have made time and again that students born in the new federal states are clearly underrepresented in the study support provided by the major german support organisations, such as the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (German National Academic Foundation), many party- and church-affiliated foundations, and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation. In this context, it is important to look for the causes and to initiate possible changes.

Based on this consideration, the TMWWDG had funded a study on the topic of "Scholarship Application and Scholarship Award - The Situation of Students from the New Federal States" at the Friedrich Schiller University in 2020. We are pleased that Professor Dr. Rosa, as the author of the study, will introduce the topic as a guest speaker in the panel discussion and will be available for further discussion.

The panel is composed as follows:

Wolfgang Tiefensee Minister for Economics, Science and Digital Society
Carsten Feller State Secretary for Economics, Science and Digital Society
Professor Dr. Hartmut Rosa Professor of the Chair of General and Theoretical Sociology and Director of the Institute of Sociology at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena as well as Director of the Max Weber College at the University of Erfurt
Dr. Annette Julius General Secretary of the German National Academic Foundation
Katja Urbatsch Founder and Managing Director of Arbeiterkind.de
Dr. Franziska Schmidtke Speaker of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation
Bernd-Uwe Althaus Deputy Head, North Thuringia State Education Authority (representing Dr. Julia Heesen, State Secretary Thuringia Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports)

However, in order to achieve broad awareness, the panel discussion can also be followed in public via the following link: https://webconf.hs-nordhausen.de/b/ste-bhn-kfw-ojx, i.e. interested parties can contribute with questions/opinions.
