The hospital reform initiated by Karl Lauterbach aims to reduce the economic pressure on hospitals, restructure the hospital landscape in a controlled manner and improve the quality of treatment at the same time. At its core, the reform is about ensuring that not every hospital is allowed to offer every service and introducing retention budgets in order to overcome the current flat rate per case system. There are also plans to introduce so-called service groups and allocate them to hospitals. One thing is certain: the hospital landscape must and will change in the coming years.

The lecture will first outline the current financing system and the planned reform steps and then examine the question of how the reform steps introduced can contribute to an improvement in the framework conditions for hospitals and what this means for the healthcare of the population.
