Subject:    Production and properties of porous metals, in particular aluminium foams

Time:        Friday, 03.12.2021, 15:00 hrs.

Place:      TU Ilmenau,Faraday building, Faraday lecture hall, Weimarer Str. 32

Speaker:  Dr. Günter Lange, TU Ilmenau, Group of Metallic Materials and Composites

Due to the increased incidence of corona infection, the 3G-Plus rule applies at the TU Ilmenau Citizens Campus. All participants must identify themselves as vaccinated or recovered with official documents before entering the Faraday lecture hall in Weimarer Straße. All other participants must present a negative PCR test not older than 48 hours.

Due to the limited number of seats, pre-registration is mandatory: www.tu-ilmenau.de/buergercampus

Nature offers numerous examples of how lightweight construction can work. Although of low weight, the leaves of plants or the bones of living creatures, for example, exhibit a high degree of rigidity and strength. Nature often uses a cellular structure for this purpose. In his lecture at the TU Ilmenau Citizens Campus (previously Senior Citizens Academy), Dr. Günter Lange, scientist at the Department of Metallic Materials and Composites at the TU Ilmenau, explains how light cellular metals can be produced for a wide range of technical applications using nature as an example. Today, for example, not only are alloys of the light metals aluminium and magnesium alternatives for the conventional heavy steel materials, but aluminium foams are also increasingly being used as innovative materials for lightweight construction. Such metal foams, whether open-pored or closed-pored, have a higher specific stiffness and a better energy and damping capacity than solid materials. However, they have a lower absolute strength compared to the mono-material. In his lecture, Dr. Lange will give an overview of the most important properties, current manufacturing processes and various applications of metallic foams.
