Tongji Zheijang University and Tongji University

Tongji Zhejiang University (TZH ) is a subsidiary institution of Shanghai-based Tongji University. Teaching and research at TZH are primarily carried out by Tongji professors and teaching staff. There are currently around 10,500 students at TZH, which offers 26 degree programs with a focus on engineering, natural sciences and economics. Relations with German universities are coordinated by the Chinese-German Center (CDZ), which is currently responsible for three degree courses - Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and German Language. The university is based in the city of Jiaxing. Jiaxing is located in the north-east of Zhejiang Province and in the heart of the Yangtze Delta; it has a population of around 3.6 million. It is about 85 km away from both Shanghai and Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province.

Jiaxing is a modern industrial city, which is primarily characterized by the textile industry, the automotive industry and the electrical industry as well as a small and medium-sized economic structure. The silk industry - Jiaxing is considered the "home of silk" in China - is also of particular importance. The city is also one of the country's most important tourist cities due to its long history (the MaJianbang culture, which originated here around 6,000 years ago, is one of the original cultures of Chinese civilization) and its distinctive cultural scene.

Tongji University (Tongji U) in Shanghai was founded in 1907 as the “German Medical School” and is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the country. Its collaboration with Germany is reflected in its many partnerships with German universities, the Sino-German College, and the atmosphere on campus itself. Tongji U has two campuses, the Siping Campus and the Jiading Campus. The latter is home to many engineering faculties, some of which also offer courses in German. This is where you will spend your second semester. With a population of almost 25 million, Shanghai is the largest city in China. The Huangpu River flows through it, with its wide promenade and impressive skyline. The city has an international character, as the translation of its name, “city from which one sets sail,” already reveals.

Advantages of the double Bachelor's degree program

TU Ilmenau

Course of study

German students complete the 6th and 7th semester in China after studying at the TU for 5 semesters. A 14-week internship in a private sector company is integrated into the last semester. The Bachelor's thesis (in China or in Germany) can also be written during this semester. Both universities are responsible for supervising the thesis, which is carried out by a university lecturer from the TU and a university lecturer from TZH or Tongji.

The course of study is therefore as follows:

Admission requirements

  • At least 5 semesters of study in the Industrial Engineering and Management program
  • Grade point average of at least 2.5 (ETCS or credit points)
  • Proof of adequate language skills in English or Chinese
    • English: TOEFL with a score of 550 or IELTS with a score of 6
    • Chinese: fulfillment of the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) requirement for the intermediate level

Application procedure

Students on the Bachelor's degree course in Industrial Engineering and Management can apply until the end of the 2nd month of the 5th semester. Care should be taken to ensure that all examinations have been completed when transferring to China so that the focus can be placed on the (economic) subjects in China and the final thesis can be started and completed there without the need to return to Germany.

  1. Application by November 30 to the faculty's examination office or the responsible program coordinator
  2. Students are informed of their admission in the following month (December)
