18 August to 15 October: ‘The Rocky Coast of the Algarve’ – exhibition at the University Library in Ilmenau

From 18 August, visitors can be transported to Portugal’s rocky coastline with the new exhibition at the Library at Technische Universität Ilmenau. In what is now his sixth exhibition at the Technische Universität Ilmenau, the Suhl-based painter Jochen Walter offers a glimpse into his most recent trip to Portugal. The exhibition can be viewed from 18 August to 15 October during the university library’s opening hours; admission is free.

Over millions of years, wind and waves have shaped the Algarve coastline on the Atlantic Ocean – a stretch of Portugal made up of limestone, sandstone and soft marl: bizarre rock formations that change colour depending on the angle of the light. In 16 paintings, acrylic on canvas, Jochen Walter captures the shapes and colours of these rocks and the effect of light at different times of day – impressions from a holiday trip to the rocky Algarve in southern Portugal. 

Jochen Walter has been fascinated by rock formations for over 50 years. His enthusiasm grew even further during trips to Saxon Switzerland and various regions of the Alps, and so the interplay between the rugged rocky coastline and the roaring Atlantic during a recent trip to Portugal held a great fascination for him – the 16 paintings were inspired by this unique natural spectacle. The exhibition ‘The Rocky Coast of the Algarve’ is on display at the University Library in Ilmenau from 18 August to 15 October.
