6G network project for new multimedia applications

Deutsche Telekom AG

Ilmenau University of Technology is working with Deutsche Telekom AG and other partners on the "6G Native Extensions for XR Technologies (6G NeXt)" project, which is developing the next generation of mobile communications. The project aims to develop new multimedia applications, such as an anti-collision system for drones, a video conferencing system that works without 3D glasses, and a mobile gaming controller. In the development of the anti-collision system, TU Ilmenau's Audiovisual Technology Group is working to collect characteristics of the network and controller to measure the success of drone control. The project is also developing a novel videoconferencing system that will display three-dimensional holograms of the participants in a true-holographic display in realistic 3D depth without 3D glasses. The researchers are also evaluating the user experience during holographic communication. The research is taking place at the Ilmenau Interactive Immersive Technologies Center (I3TC).

The consortium met in Ilmenau on March 22 and 23, 2023, and successfully discussed aspects of technical planning and scientific research.
