The TU Ilmenau is launching the new"Data Science" course - the Bachelor's course in the winter semester 2025/26 and the Master's course in the summer semester 2026, which will also enable students to complete a double degree at TU Ilmenau and the Finnish Lappeenranta University of Technology. The bilingual German-English Bachelor's degree program in Data Science provides students with a solid foundation in mathematics and computer science as well as in-depth knowledge of data analysis and machine learning methods. In the English-language Master's program, they then acquire sound skills in dealing with data at the interface between scientific innovation and economic progress, which opens up brilliant career prospects in a wide variety of social areas worldwide.
Data science is the foundation of the modern information society. Whether it's weather forecasting and climate change, improving streaming recommendations or understanding complex relationships in as yet unexplored diseases - data science is indispensable for mastering our digital world. The Data Science degree program prepares young men and women for a brilliant professional future in technology, business and medicine. The excellent student-teacher ratio at the TU Ilmenau guarantees personal support and encouragement.
Bachelor's degree programData Science: theory and practice from the first semester
In the Bachelor's degree course in Data Science, which starts in the upcoming winter semester 2025/26, students initially receive a solid interdisciplinary foundation in mathematics, statistics and computer science. This enables them to understand and effectively apply specialized data science techniques, such as complex artificial intelligence methods like machine learning, as well as advanced methods of data analysis. In addition to this theoretical foundation, they acquire practical skills in handling data, from its collection to its evaluation, from the very first semester.
The Bachelor's degree program aims to ensure that students not only use theoretical concepts and methods for a specific application, but that they also penetrate complex tasks in depth and critically reflect on their own work. Involved from the outset in applied research projects and international networks, they are thus specifically prepared for a successful international career in almost every sector of society in an increasingly global labor market.
The Bachelor's degree program in Data Science is taught bilingually in German and English. Without the need for an English test, students begin their studies with the basics in German and then gradually switch to modules taught entirely in English. In English courses, they learn the specific technical vocabulary they need for their degree program.
Master's degree programData Science: at the interface of scientific innovation and industrial progress
On the English-language Master's degree course in Data Science, which starts in the summer semester of 2026students delve deep into the world of data - at the interface between scientific innovation and industrial progress. In order to answer important social questions, they learn how to deal with state-of-the-art technologies. To this end, they are introduced to AI-supported decision-making based on mathematical models.
Students are familiarized with IT tools such as cloud computing and data management, which are essential for modern data analysis. They gain expert knowledge in Bayesian inference or in the quantification of uncertainties and they learn state-of-the-art techniques in reinforcement learning and data assimilation - fundamentals for making better predictions in critical areas such as weather forecasting or climate change, but also for making the right decisions in medical research or business applications. The Master's program enables young women and men to design their study profile flexibly and to specialize in the areas that inspire them most.
A cooperation with the Technical University of Lappeenranta in Finland offers them the opportunity to complete the course with a double degree. This gives them excellent opportunities on the job market, especially with international companies and in professional fields that require both technical and intercultural skills. They also build up networks at two different universities and in two different countries, which further improves their future career opportunities.
