About the BIP

Citizens’ Lab: Cinema, Democracy, and Interdisciplinary Futures is an interdisciplinary programme bringing together social sciences, film studies, human geography, design, and emerging media technologies. The BIP explores how cinema, visual media, and immersive storytelling contribute to democratic culture, civic imagination, and intercultural dialogue.

The program is jointly developed by unibz, the Bolzano Film Festival Bozen (BFFB), the ZeLIG School for Documentary, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, and the University of Freiburg, and is closely connected to the 2026 edition of the Bolzano Film Festival Bozen, with a special focus on Catalonia and Taiwan.



The program includes:

  • academic lectures linking film analysis and democratic theory;

  • curated film screenings and cine-forums with international directors;

  • a masterclass with filmmaker Marta Andreu;

  • industry panels with professionals from Catalonia and Northern Italy;

  • interdisciplinary group work and project labs;

  • a thematic focus on VR and immersive storytelling, co-organised with BFFB.

  • When: Online preparatory session: 9 April 2026; On-site phase in Bolzano: 13–17 April 2026

  • Where: SUNRISE partner university: Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy

  • ECTS: 3

  • Language requirements: English B2 

 

Application requirements:

  • Master’s students from the 2nd semester onwards

  • Grade average better than 3.0 (German grading scale)

  • First participation in a Blended Intensive Program (BIP)
