Raul Flores EstradaAs part of the 2026 Spring Cleanup, students from Technische Universität Ilmenau and other volunteers worked to create a cleaner environment on and around the campus. The main focus was the university area, where a significant amount of litter was collected again this year, including cigarette butts, plastic packaging, broken glass, wood scraps, metal parts, and bulky items.
The meeting point for the student helpers was the Lupe at the Ernst-Abbe-Zentrum, where 11 participants gathered. From there, groups set out in different directions to clean areas around the university, with a focus on the campus and its surrounding spaces.
In the university area alone, 15 bags of litter were collected. Cleaning was particularly demanding in peripheral areas, on embankments, and in overgrown spaces near student residences, where trash had accumulated over time. In these hard-to-reach areas, the joint effort of the students was especially valuable.
Raul Flores Estrada, a master’s student at TU Ilmenau, commented: “Every contribution matters, whether it’s picking up a simple piece of plastic or removing a large piece of wood. It has a positive impact on our environment. That’s why I’m glad I took part in this initiative.”
The event demonstrated that students should not only learn on campus but also take responsibility for their study environment. Through their efforts, participants directly contributed to a cleaner university area.
For future cleanup actions, there is hope that less litter will be found, which would indicate greater consideration and a more conscious approach to our shared surroundings.
Another collection point was the parking lot of the swimming pool, where around 10 participants, including children, joined in. From there, groups also set out in different directions to clean additional areas.
