On October 30, 2024, we visited Stadtwerke Haßfurt, which is considered a pioneer of the energy transition. The Managing Director, Mr. Norbert Zösch, gave us exciting insights into the company. With an almost complete power supply from solar and wind and an innovative hydrogen production facility that has been in operation since 2016, the municipal utility is setting standards in sustainable energy supply. Haßfurt, a town with a population of around 17,000, produces twice as much energy from renewable sources as is consumed by households and some large consumers in the town area.
The visit offered exciting insights into the municipal utility's diverse energy portfolio, which combines various pioneering technologies. These include a power-to-gas plant with methanation and feed-in into the natural gas grid, a local heating network, battery storage, a biogas plant and wind and solar parks, which together create an integrated, sustainable energy system. Stadtwerke Haßfurt impressively demonstrates how the energy transition can be successfully implemented in a municipality and how a low-carbon future can be shaped.
