When eating becomes a burden, there is often more to it than a harmless indigestion. Postprandial pain – that is, abdominal pain after eating – can be a sign of what specialists call mesenteric claudication, a circulatory disorder affecting the blood vessels of the intestines. Those affected feel extremely unsettled by this; they often even develop a genuine fear of eating. Particularly serious: these symptoms can be early warning signs of so-called mesenteric ischaemia, an acute circulatory disorder that ranks among the most dangerous abdominal emergencies, in which intestinal tissue can die off within a short space of time – a condition that becomes life-threatening if left untreated.
In his lecture as part of the TU Ilmenau Citizens’ Campus, Illhami Benli, Consultant in the Department of Vascular Surgery / Vascular Medicine at the Ilm-Kreis-Kliniken Arnstadt-Ilmenau, how such warning signs arise, which modern diagnostic procedures enable early detection, and what treatment options – ranging from medication to endovascular procedures – are available. Benli aims to raise awareness amongst his audience of the urgency of these conditions and to highlight ways in which those affected can regain confidence in their diet.
