20.11.2025: Yesterday at the BIPM in Paris, colleagues from NIST (Stephan Schlamminger, Leon Chao, Kumar Arumugam), the PTB (Christian Rothleitner,Johannes Konrad) and from our institute at the TU Ilmenau (Thomas Fröhlich, Suren Vasilyan, Norbert Rogge) presented the results of a international mass comparison of their three table-top kibble scales.
The central question was whether kibble scales can determine mass without relying on classical mass metrology. The successful result shows that the unknown test masses could indeed be measured independently of each other.
This breakthrough is not only a scientific achievement in redefining the unit of mass - it is a significant milestone in modern metrology, which is becoming smarter, faster and fully digital.
