We mourn the passing of Martin Sauerbrey

On April 14, 2025, Martin Sauerbrey, Dipl.-Ing., a long-time technician at the Institute for Practical Computer Science, passed away at the age of 74. Martin Sauerbrey was born on August 11, 1950, in Martinroda. 

In 1967, he began his apprenticeship as an electromechanic at the former Ilmenau University of Technology (TH), which he successfully completed in 1969. Following his training, he completed his basic military service in the NVA (National People's Army). 

After his return, he worked as a mechanic in the "Organization and Computing Center" (ORZ), the former computer center of the Ilmenau University of Technology, in the Helmholtz Building.Martin Sauerbrey completed a distance learning course at the Görlitz School of Engineering from 1973 to 1978, graduating with a degree in industrial electronics.From now on he was employed as a maintenance engineer in the ORZ. 

During the years of political change in 1989/1990, Prof. Dr.-Ing.Reinhold Schönefeld founded the Institute of Practical Computer Science.Soon after, Mr. Sauerbrey, along with two of his colleagues from the ORZ technical services, transferred to the newly established institute, where he remained until his retirement in 2016. 

Martin Sauerbrey was a highly valued colleague and dedicated member of our institute's staff, who always proved to be a reliable support in the implementation of all technical work required at the institute.His great willingness to help, his sometimes very creative, pragmatic ideas, and his craftsmanship will always be remembered, and the results of his work can still be seen today in many rooms of the Zuse building. 

We are all deeply saddened by the sudden death of Martin Sauerbrey.We will honor his memory.Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family and loved ones.
