A new portal-based friction stir welding system was presented at a ceremony in the Newton Building in the Production Engineering Group in the presence of a large number of guests from industry. The system has been in use in research since the end of 2024.
This investment opens up completely new possibilities for the scientists at Ilmenau Production Engineering in process control and in the analysis of tools during friction stir welding.
After a brief introduction by Prof. Jean Pierre Bergmann, Dean Prof. Thomas Sattel addressed the audience and emphasized the importance of the investment for the department.
The presentations and remarks by Dr. Axel Meyer and Michael Grätzel once again highlighted the potential and challenges of friction stir welding from an industrial perspective with illustrative use cases.
Representatives of Technical Committee 5 of the Research Association of the German Welding Society (DVS - Deutscher Verband für Schweißen und verwandte Verfahren e. V.) and a large number of representatives from companies in the region attended the inauguration.
The investment is a portal-based system from the Grenzebach Group DSM 30-14.
The project was supported by the Free State of Thuringia (FKZ: 2023 FGI 0006) and co-financed by the European Union.
