Read our recent open access publication in Experiments in Fluids, in collaboration with ZMN on "Particle detection and size recognition based on defocused particle images: a comparison of a deterministic algorithm and a deep neural network". By extending the widely used astigmatism particle tracking velocimetry (APTV) with particle size classification, we were able to distinguish between different particle species with an accuracy of up to 99.9% without having to adjust the experimental setup. Moreover, the high similarity between the experimental and our modified semi-synthetic images enabled reliable detection of overlapping particle images by a deep neural network and significantly improved the achievable detection rate!
