At the Physics Summer 2023, pupils of the upper secondary school will gain deep insights into the exciting world of quantum physics

"Something with quanta!" - on September 25, the Physics Summer 2023 will start at the Technische Universität Ilmenau. For five days, physics-loving high school students will gain deep insights into the exciting world of quantum physics. The summer college consists of lectures, a project work and practical experiments, plus an entertaining social program. For the young men and women, who come from all over Germany, the participation fee of 99 euros includes accommodation in the Ilmenau youth hostel with half board and meals in the university canteen. "Something with quanta!" - that could be the answer of young high school graduates to the question: What do you want to study? Given the rapid developments in quantum technologies in areas such as computers, communications or cryptography, experts in quantum physics are increasingly needed. With the Physics Summer 2023, the TU Ilmenau wants to further kindle enthusiasm, especially among high school students who are taking physics advanced courses, physics advanced subjects, or special science classes, and attract them to study in Ilmenau.

With three challenging units that build on each other, the summer college will challenge the young people: Well-founded introductory lectures by lecturers from the Institute of Physics will lay the foundation for the topics of the project work, which, at half of the college, will take up the largest share in terms of time. The groups of students carry out theoretical or experimental projects, for example on quanta in everyday life, quanta in medicine or quantum sensors. In the third unit, practical experiments, the young people learn modern experimental techniques and methods of physics and apply them to the topic of the college, quantum physics. They conduct the literature research necessary for the seminar work like real students in the university library, the largest technical-scientific library in Thuringia, and on the Internet.

The Physics Summer 2023 is organized by a team of scientists led by Prof. Jörg Kröger, head of the Group of Experimental Physics I and recent winner of the Thuringian Research Award 2023, which he received for his many years of research work on the quantum physics of matter.

In addition to scientific work, diversions await the students, such as a welcome evening at a student club with their lecturers and tutors and a tour of the university campus, where they will get to know student life. The program also includes a guided tour of Ilmenau and fun on the summer toboggan run.
