It is impossible to imagine our everyday life without plastics. We encounter products and components made of plastic in all areas of our lives, for example as food packaging or as components in cars or in electrical appliances. At the same time, however, we are confronted with television images of plastic waste in the world's oceans or in huge landfills. Yet in Germany we talk about a recycling rate for plastics of over 99 percent. How does that fit together?

Prof. Florian Puch, Head of the Group of Plastics Technology at the TU Ilmenau, explores this question in his lecture at the TU Ilmenau Citizens' Campus. In doing so, he traces the path of plastics through the various stages of their cycle: from production and processing to their use. Prof. Puch also gives an overview of the various recycling processes for plastics, the challenges they face in the circular economy, and he presents perspectives on their use and recovery in the future.
