Every day, we are exposed to a variety of acoustic stimuli - especially in cities: pleasant sounds like birds chirping in a park, but also more and more unpleasant sounds: city noise. While people can easily stop absorbing visual stimuli - closing their eyes is enough - it's not so easy with acoustic stimuli, because you can't simply switch off your hearing. City noise can then be disturbing and lead to a reduction in the quality of life, even making people ill. Cities are therefore keen to take measures to reduce noise as much as possible. However, measuring noise is difficult due to a multitude of influencing factors: duration of the noise, weather conditions, wind direction, time of day or even the subjective perception of each individual.

In her lecture at the TU Ilmenau Citizens' Campus , Judith Liebetrau from the performance center InSignA, Intelligent Signal Analysis and Assistance Systems, explains the basics of human noise perception. She then vividly describes metrological methods for assessing noise and presents the state of the art in research on noise measurement and classification.
