
Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Broll, head of the Virtual Worlds and Digital Games Group at TU Ilmenau, has been inducted into the IEEE VGTC Virtual Reality Academy. His induction into the Class of 2026 was announced during the Opening Session of the IEEE Virtual Reality Conference 2026, held in Daegu, Republic of Korea.
The IEEE VGTC Virtual Reality Academy is one of the field’s most prestigious honors. According to the IEEE VGTC, it recognizes leaders whose accomplishments exceed or augment the criteria of the community’s existing awards and highlights individuals who have made significant, sustained contributions to virtual, augmented, and mixed reality.
For TU Ilmenau, the distinction highlights Wolfgang Broll’s long-standing contributions to immersive technologies. Based on his publicly documented research profile and publication record, these include work on collaborative XR environments, augmented, diminished and mediated reality, as well as XR authoring and user studies.
The honor also reflects his sustained international service to the research community. Wolfgang Broll currently serves as Chair of the ISMAR Steering Committee and ISMAR Liaison in the IEEE VGTC Executive Committee.
