Service Anniversary Dr. Alexander Novitskiy

25 years of energy research in Ilmenau - Dr. Novitskiy's service anniversary

In January 2026, the Power Systems Group celebrated a special anniversary: Dr.-Ing. habil. Alexander Novitskiy was honored for his 25 years of service as a research assistant at TU Ilmenau. Dr. Novitskiy came to TU Ilmenau as a DAAD scholarship holder from St. Petersburg Polytechnic University in 1996. Following this stay, Dr. Novitskiy habilitated at the TU Ilmenau, where he still conducts research today.

His research covers all key aspects of electrical energy supply: from the generation and transmission to the distribution of energy. Dr. Novitskiy focuses on grid planning, operational management optimization, reactive power compensation and loss minimization, electrical power quality and minimization of grid perturbations as well as electromagnetic compatibility.

Dr. Novitskiy's research is very practice-oriented, so he can imagine nothing better than seeing "the realization of the developed research concepts in daily industrial practice. I look forward to seeing the electric steel plants built and working in a number of countries around the world, where I have contributed to the development of power factor correction solutions as well as the minimization of grid perturbations. I am delighted that a company that I have also advised, among others, has been awarded the Thuringian Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Nature Conservation prize as one of the most energy-efficient companies in Thuringia," said Dr. Novitskiy when asked about the special moments in his research career.

An important topic of his research work is investigations into electromagnetic compatibility in electrical networks. The "Thüringer Strombrücke" for energy transmission, which runs not far from Ilmenau, combines powerful circuits of several voltage levels and frequencies on common pylons, which required special consideration of EMC issues. "Every time I drive from Ilmenau to Erfurt and see these shared pylons, I am pleased that part of my research results are also firmly anchored in this system," says Dr. Novitskiy.

We would like to thank Dr. Novitskiy for the wonderful collaboration over the last few years and wish him every success with his future projects!
