The Technische Universität Ilmenau is strengthening its range of courses on the protection of intellectual property with an international project of the European Patent Office. The TU Ilmenau has been selected as one of 35 universities in Europe to offer the "Modular IP Education Framework" on patents. Starting in the upcoming summer semester of 2025, master's and doctoral students will take online courses in which they will gain in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge about the development, protection and marketing of ideas.
The partnership between PATON, the Thuringia State Patent Center based at TU Ilmenau, and the university's Graduate Center with the European Patent Office will enable 17 students to gain in-depth theoretical knowledge and practical skills in intellectual property in a modern teaching format for the first time in the summer semester.
The course, which will be offered every semester from the summer semester starting on April 1, can be taken by Master's students and doctoral candidates from any subject area and leads to a certificate via a final examination. The one-semester course on the development, protection and marketing of ideas with a focus on the combination of patent protection and entrepreneurial innovation comprises online modules for participants to work through, video calls with experts and interactive forums. In the interactive modules, they will learn how patents, trademarks and design protection are integrated into business strategies and get to know real inventors' stories. Multimedia offerings such as online case studies, in which practical cases are worked on, support the learning process.
Of particular interest to participants is the opportunity to interact directly with experts in the field of intellectual property: patent examiners from the European Patent Office, patent attorneys and patent search experts. Particularly exciting: their training program also includes meeting winners and finalists of the European Inventor Award.
