Technische Universität Ilmenau is hosting the West Thuringia regional competition of "Jugend forscht" from February 22 to 25. 70 students will present their work, which they have carried out in 35 research projects on a wide range of scientific topics, to a jury of experts via video. The 56th round of the regional competitions of "Jugend forscht" and "Schüler experimentieren" is taking place simultaneously throughout Germany under the motto "Lass Zukunft da" (Leave the future there). The winners of the regional competitions qualify for the state competition, which will be held on March 25 and 26 at the Ernst Abbe University in Jena. The grand national final will then take place from 27 to 30 May at the Science Center experimenta in Heilbronn.

For many years, the TU Ilmenau and the Universitätsgesellschaft Ilmenau, the Friends and Sponsors of the University, have been sponsors of the West Thuringia Regional Competition. Supported by the company Lindig GmbH from Eisenach, they organize the two competitions of "Jugend forscht" and "Schüler experimentieren" for children and young people from the Wartburg district, the Gotha district and the Ilm district at the TU Ilmenau. Young people between the ages of 15 and 21 compete in the "Jugend forscht" section, while younger pupils up to the age of 14 compete in the junior section of "Schüler experimentieren".

In order to protect the health of the children and young people, the regional competition is being held online for the first time this year. For this purpose, the foundation Jugend forscht e. V. and the sponsoring companies such as the TU Ilmenau have created the technical prerequisites. The presentations of the projects, the discussions with the jury and also the award ceremony on 26 February at 3 p.m. will take place as video conferences. However, in order to give the young researchers the opportunity to get to know each other in person as well, there will be an action day for Jugend forscht on the campus of TU Ilmenau on 14 July, infection situation permitting.

This year, the young scientists will once again be presenting a wide range of exciting and innovative research projects in seven subject areas. In biology, for example, they are looking into the search for antibiotic-resistant bacteria in schools or how learning takes place under the influence of music or how bark beetles cause damage. In chemistry, the young people develop disinfectants without a strong smell or examine the quality of water in beverage containers. In mathematics/computer science, two project groups deal with the Poisson distribution, a probability calculation from the mathematical subfield of stochastics. The physical and technical topics range from infrared cameras to automatic 3D object modeling. Younger participants investigate household chemicals for environmental compatibility and the secrets of moss in their "Schüler experimentieren" projects.
