TU Ilmenau scores again with the quality of its study programs

Students at the TU Ilmenau benefit from an excellent supervision ratio, international exchange programs, targeted specialisation opportunities and, last but not least, the best career prospects. This has recently been confirmed twice for the degree program "Industrial Engineering and Management": after the students of the Master's program had already catapulted the university into the top group of all 41 listed German universities in the CHE ranking at the end of 2020 with their assessment of the general study situation, the program also made it into the top 10 again in the current university ranking of the magazine WirtschaftsWoche "Germany's Best Universities". Almost exclusively unequally larger universities placed ahead of TU Ilmenau.

"At which universities or colleges do you prefer to recruit your employees?" - this was the question asked by the Employer-Branding-Beratung Universum on behalf of WirtschaftsWoche to over 500 HR managers from companies with ten to thousands of employees. When selecting an applicant, the personnel managers place the most value on the personality of an applicant, followed by the practical relevance of the course of study, in addition to the actual course of study. The fact that the graduates of the Ilmenau course in Industrial Engineering and Management have convinced the personnel managers is attributed by the head of the course, Prof. Norbert Bach, to the good study situation at the TU Ilmenau: "We have an excellent super3vision ratio at our relatively small university. Therefore, unlike at large universities, the students of Ilmenau are in very close contact with the lecturers. And with innovative forms of teaching such as case study exercises and project work, we try to support them in preparing for the specialist internship and in developing their own personalities."

Interdisciplinary education

The excellent education at TU Ilmenau to become an industrial engineer takes equal account of law and economics as well as natural sciences and engineering. "In times," according to the Uniranking article in WirtschaftsWoche, "in which technology companies increasingly have to face the question of what social consequences their developments have, an interdisciplinary education becomes more important." At the TU Ilmenau, industrial engineering students can choose between the technical specialisations of mechanical engineering and electrical engineering in their bachelor's degree. In the master's program, they can then choose between the technical specialisations of automation engineering or biomedical engineering - two flagships of Ilmenau research - as additional alternatives. The TU Ilmenau is the only university in Germany to offer the latter. For those interested in studying industrial engineering, there is another reason to enrol at TU Ilmenau: Should Bachelor students develop a preference for the economics subjects in their first semesters, they can switch to the new degree program "Business Administration with a Technical Orientation", which will be offered for the first time in the winter semester 2021/22, without losing any time.

Promotion of a semester abroad

Unique in germany, the TU Ilmenau also offers its bachelor students the opportunity to acquire two degrees in parallel during a three-semester stay in China as part of a double-degree program with Tongji University in Shanghai. In order to study abroad temporarily, however, Ilmenau students do not necessarily have to take a double degree. A mobility window gives them the opportunity to complete part of their studies abroad within their degree program.

The master's program is also internationally oriented and offers numerous english-language modules to choose from. Through ERASMUS+, the European Union's largest funding program for stays abroad worldwide, students from TU Ilmenau can study temporarily at a european university - and soon also earn a double degree at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru PUCP: Building on a long-standing cooperation with the tradition-rich private peruvian university, the two universities are currently developing a corresponding double-degree program. Preparations are also underway for master's students to specialise in a field of study of the future: "Regenerative Energy Technology".
