University magazine 2.0: TU Ilmenau launches UNIonline

The TU Ilmenau is launching a new digital university magazine. UNIonline wants to inform the readers comprehensively about the TU Ilmenau - from university politics about studies, research and transfer to stories about people or life on campus. The design of UNIonline is fresh and modern, and special emphasis was placed on a high degree of user-friendliness, in addition to a variety of useful functions. In order to reach a readership not only at the university itself, but throughout Thuringia, Germany and far beyond, the new web magazine is completely bilingual in german and english: www.tu-ilmenau.de/unionline/en

With UNIonline, the TU Ilmenau is transferring its previous print magazine UNI ("UniversitätsNachrichten Ilmenau") into the age of digitalisation. The first "Mitteilungsblatt" of the Hochschule für Elektrotechnik, the predecessor institution of the TU Ilmenau, was published in 1956. With the UNI magazine that emerged from it, the university published a magazine for 62 years - until the printed magazine was discontinued last year. The new online format was developed in only half a year - with numerous added values compared to the printed edition: The reach of the web magazine exceeds that of the magazine many times. UNIonline is responsive, which means that its layout automatically adapts to the screen size of the end device used, from the large desktop monitor to the small smartphone display. In this way, the online magazine accommodates the contemporary reading habits of not only younger users. The articles are partly enriched with videos or photos, partly with linked websites or documents. Each article can be "shared", i.e. readers can recommend it to other people by clicking on it. A contact box with the name of a contact person for each article turns UNIonline into an interactive medium. Readers are also invited to submit their own articles.

In addition to students and employees of the TU Ilmenau, UNIonline addresses prospective students and graduates, but also potential partners from business, science and society and all other interested readers from Germany and abroad. The content spectrum of the online journal is correspondingly broad. Users have access to all articles via eight category buttons: University Politics - Studies - Research - Campus - Transfer - People - Reportage - Series. UNIonline is constantly updated and particularly important breaking news is posted at short notice via a so-called crawl, a moving treadmill.

From the former print magazine UNI, UNIonline takes over the section "Unipolitik" with the most important events concerning the strategic orientation of the TU Ilmenau as a research-strong technical university in the world of science. In line with the needs of the mostly young readership, the "Studies" section presents, among other things, impressions of study at the TU Ilmenau in videos. The content is linked to social media, even more so than in the rest of the online magazine. With digital functionalities, content such as "The Question!" prepared: the regular survey of students on current issues of interest to them and prospective students is presented via slideshow. The "Research" section takes advantage of the online medium's ability to present content via video, including the new format "Researchers in Conversation", in which scientists from TU Ilmenau report on their outstanding research work in in-depth interviews. Also in the "Research" section, UNIonline presents significant scientific publications in renowned journals.

A new feature is the "Transfer" section, a task to which the university has increasingly dedicated itself in addition to its traditional fields of study and research. Here, readers can find current information on the transfer of know-how of the scientists of the TU Ilmenau into the economy and society. If a cooperation with the TU Ilmenau is desired, contact persons of the university are available. In the "People" section, interested readers can find out not only who has received "Awards" have received,Newly appointed" or "New in office", here there are also colourful, completely non-academic stories about people or life on campus.

With the new, digital university magazine UNIonline, the TU Ilmenau would like to make a contribution to climate protection. By saving paper and eliminating printing and mailing, it helps to reduce emissions of environmentally harmful CO2.
