An operation is an exceptional situation for patients. There is a great desire for healing without complications and human attention. It is important to establish a relationship of trust between patient and surgeon. The development of medicine, and surgery in particular, is moving towards maximum specialization and efficiency. Is our medicine losing its humanity in the process? Are the machines taking over?

In his lecture at the TU Ilmenau  Citizens' Campus, Prof. Dr. Merten Hommann will shed light on modern surgical procedures, including operations with robotic systems. He attempts to classify the technical developments in a patient-oriented surgery.

Prof. Dr. Merten Hommann has been Head of the Clinic for General Surgery / Visceral Surgery at Zentralklinik Bad Berka since 2007. In addition to the entire spectrum of surgery, the clinic focuses on surgery for tumor diseases of the liver, pancreas, stomach, colon and rectum as well as surgical treatment of the endocrine glands, thyroid and adrenal glands. Operations are performed using open surgery, minimally invasive and robotic techniques. The clinic is part of the certified European Center of Excellence for Neuroendocrine Tumors.
